It is therefore, important for our primary and secondary schools, especially girl schools to provide encouragement to their students so that they can excel and become self-confident,\u201d the President said in her address at the centenary celebrations of Laban Bengali Girl\u2019s Hr. Sec. School.<br \/>\nShe also stressed on the need to better the economic condition of women, particularly in villages and rural areas, through self-income generating activities.<br \/>\n\u201cIf women are educated, they can help in removing many of the evil social practices and dealing with addiction to liquor and drugs, a problem which is increasing among the youth,\u201d she said.<br \/>\nExpressing concern over poor literacy rates among the women folks in Meghalaya despite the State being a matrilineal society, Patil said the State must strive for 100 percent literacy levels and focus on women\u2019s education. \u201cI believe that every woman in our country must be literate and educated. Women make up about half the population of our country,\u201d she opined. \u201cWe have a nationwide programme for universal primary education for all and a commitment to provide access to education to all,\u201d she added.<br \/>\nThe President also urged the youth of the country to put efforts to make India as one of the highly advanced nations. \u201cWe must make every effort to make India one of the highly advanced nations with talented human resources by providing our youth with good education and technical expertise,\u201d she said.<br \/>\nPraising the Indian youth for their hard work and their capabilities to face the challenges, the President said education gives one the ability to face challenges and also makes one tolerant, disciplined and hardworking. \u201cTheir knowledge and capabilities must be used to make India into developed nations,\u201d she said.<br \/>\nAnnouncing the sanctioning of Rs two crore for developing the Laban Bengali Girl\u2019s Higher Secondary School, Chief Minister Donkupar Roy requested the President to use her offices to improve the infrastructure of educational institution in  Meghalaya<br \/>\n \u201cThe government intends to set up one Government College and one model school in every district of the state and establishing of a state level mission to develop skill developing for employment.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In India where the fairer sex makes up about one-half of the population, President of India Pratibha Devisingh Patil today said every woman in the country must be literate and educated. \u201cA nation cannot progress without educating and empowering its women.
