Literacy day is proclaimed for disseminating literacy awareness amongst world\u2019s illiterate community. <br \/>\u201cLiteracy and women\u2019s empowerment\u201d is the theme of International Literacy Day 2010, while women\u2019s empowerment is at the core of the global development agenda, girls still account for more than half of the 67.4 million out-of-school children in the world, and two-thirds of the 796 million adult illiterates are female. <br \/>FPA India, Nagaland Branch in a small and simple function observed \u2018International Literacy Day\u2019 at its Reproductive Health &#038; Family Planning Clinic (RHFPC). <br \/>The branch manager speaking on the occasion explained literacy as the ability to read and write a short statement relevant to routine life with understanding.<br \/>Other highlights of the day included school visit at Mt. Sinia School through classroom interaction; and the launching of \u2018Spoken English\u2019 program for the key population under the Japan Trust Funded project. <br \/>The branch manager also conveyed gratitude to Sali of Sisterhood Network, Kohima for the support extended in regard to \u2018Spoken English\u2019 which was open for enrollment. <br \/>Peace Channel: Peace Channel in collaboration with North East Zonal Cultural Centre commemorated international Literacy Day on September 8 by organizing inter-school literary competition at Holy Cross Campus, Dimapur. <br \/>72 participants from 17 schools in Dimapur competed in speech, recitation and story telling competitions.  <br \/>Earlier, a gathering of over 300 students and invitees were welcomed by Talinokcha, director, NEZCC. He said such event was held in order to create awareness on importance of literacy among the general population. Delivering keynote address, guest speaker, Dr. Hashito Chishi, director, NICC, Dimapur threw light on the various issues related to literacy and need for people\u2019s participation in eradicating illiteracy. <br \/>He enumerated various schemes and programmes carried out by the central and state governments in order to reach education to each and every citizen. <br \/>In speech competition, Paulene Das of St. Paul HSS won the first prize, Angelina Ao of SPHSS bagged second position, while Akalu H Shohe of Hebron HSS and Neha Mech of St. Mary\u2019s HSS shared the third prize. <br \/>In the recitation competition, Dhriti Chakraborti of CHSS Dimapur, Renathung Tsanglo of Eden HSS and Kinitoli Rochill of LFHSS Dimapur bagged the first, second and third prizes respectively. The laurels of the story telling competition were shared by Sharanika Chakraborty of SPHSS coming first, Otimenla Lemtor of ARTC Model School coming second and Richard Kithan of St. Edmund School bagging the third.  <br \/>Other highlights of the programme included a recitation by Janice of Hebron HSS, Rajasthani dance by ARTC Model School and bamboo dance from SPHSS Dimapur. Kishor Dass, PRO, Peace Channel thanked the invitees and the participants. The event came to a close by the Peace Channel Band live performance. <br \/>Rotary Club: Rotary Club of Dimapur celebrated world literacy day on September 8 at Soyamsevi Sanskrit Vidyalaya Purana Bazar. In its continued effort to eradicate illiteracy, free text books and stationeries were distributed to the students of school and also provided water filter to the school under safe drinking water project.<br \/>The Vidyalaya is run through donors, patrons and well wishers. The students also presented dance items that enthralled the audience. Rtn. Sanjay Kumar Jain president of Rotary Club of Dimapur highlighted about club activities and world literacy day and further assured that students of Vidyalaya would be insured under Rotary Child Insurance Project. Rtn R.S. Panesar and Rtn. Tikaram Dhakal also spoke on occasion.
