As per the directive of the chief medical officer, Kohima, a team of doctors, food and sanitary inspectors under the CMO along with police personnel conducted inspection of all hotels, restaurants, food joints, etc in Kohima to ensure hygienic condition of the premises. The team that conducted inspection early November, concluded its second phase of cleanliness drive Thursday.\nCovering about 57 food joints including hotels, restaurants, bakeries in Kohima, the kitchen area of some of these places were found to be \u2018unhygienic and filthy\u2019. A particular restaurant was found to be using \u2018Metanil Yellow\u2019 for colouring of Indian sweets. The colouring substance is a chemical used solely for industrial purpose and not for human consumption.
\nIn this regard, the inspection team cautioned the general public to check such substances before consumption and also check excessive colouring of food items which was harmful for health. Cleanliness scrutiny was also conducted in local \u2018paan\u2019 shops.
\nDuring the inspection, spot medical test on vendors and helpers was done by the medical doctors to check their fitness and health conditions. Fitness certificates as well as Prevention of Food Adulteration License were given away.
\nThe inspection team appealed the owners and proprietors of hotels, restaurants and other food joints in the state capital to keep their places clean and hygienic for the wellbeing of the general public.
