Naga Elders\u2019 Forum, Shillong (NEFS) has been formally formed on August 7 with its motto, \u201cBond beyond Borders.\u201d
\nA press release issued by NEFS president Akheto Sema  and general secretary Toshi Sanglir stated that it aspired to be an inclusive body which would be apolitical and hence membership of the forum was open to any Naga elder (who was duly recognized by Naga customary laws and accepted by the society as a Naga) living or working in Shillong and its vicinity including the research scholars if willing.

\nAccording to NEFS president and general secretary the main objectives of the forum are to promote all round development of Naga community living in Shillong and its vicinity; to encourage and maintain goodwill relationship amongst various Naga tribes and with other communities; to guide, advise and encourage Naga students for their academic excellence and realization of their potential; to help safeguard the Nagas\u2019 way of life, culture and traditions;  to advise and assist any member of Naga community facing genuine discrimination, intimidation or injustice; to intervene and represent the Naga community in any matters of conflict involving other non-Naga community as and when necessary; and to take cognizance of any misconduct by any Naga within the forums\u2019 jurisdiction which tarnishes the good image of the community and take precautionary\/disciplinary measures as and when necessary. <\/p>\n

An interim body for the NEFS consisting of 4 members was constituted in its first GBM with Mhonbemo Shitiri as the chairman and Dr. Xavier P. Mao as secretary, Bonny Resu as the treasurer, and Hevuto Ayemi as assistant general secretary. During the subsequent GBM, the house nominated constitution drafting committee for NEFS headed by G. Akheto Sema, as the Convener, along with Rev. Bonny Resu, Prof. A. Lemtur, H.L. Shangreiso and Tasongwi Newmei as members. <\/p>\n

\nThe draft constitution prepared by Committee was ratified and adopted by Naga elders in its third general body meeting held on the August 7 and thus NEFS formally came into being. <\/p>\n

During the same period GBM, new executive members of NEFS were elected with G. Akheto Sema IPS, CVO, NEEPCO, as President, H.L. Shangreiso, advocate, as vice president, Toshi Sanglir, Director, NEIDAC, as the general secretary, Dr. Meriyani Odyuo, Assistant Professor, St. Anthony\u2019s College, Shillong, as the Joint Secretary, Setong Sangtam, project officer, central welfare department as finance secretary, Samol Tepa, accounts officer, NEEPCO as assistant finance secretary, Rev. Bonny, general secretary, Asia-Pacific Baptist Federation, as the Treasurer, Tasongwi Newmei, Assistant Professor, NERIE-NCERT, Shillong, as the publicity secretary, and Besii Kasani, executive officer IDBI bank, as the assistant publicity secretary. <\/p>\n
