Zydus Cadila\u2019s locally developed anti-Covid jab ZyCoV-D secured a regulatory approval on Friday for emergency use, becoming the world\u2019s first DNA based vaccine for Covid-19 to be administered in children and adults of age 12 years and above.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The company has indicated an initial visibility of supplying around 5 crore doses by December, a senior official said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
While the government is yet to sign a final agreement with Cadila, supplies to the national programme are likely to begin by September end, he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The approval assumes significance as it will not only help the government ramp up vaccination but also play a crucial role in immunising children between 12-18 years age once supplies improve going forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The DNA-based vaccine is the sixth jab against SARS-CoV2 to get emergency use authorisation in India. So far, Covishield, Covaxin, Sputnik V are available in India, whereas vaccines developed by Moderna and J&J have also been approved with emergency authorisation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Till 9pm on Friday, a total of over 57.48 crore doses of anti-Covid jabs have been administered across the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The three-dose vaccine, developed in partnership with the department of biotechnology, has been approved with a dosage cycle where the second and third shot of the jab will be administered in an interval of 28 days and 56 days from the first dose, respectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Interim results of ZyCoV-D from Phase-3 clinical trials, in over 28,000 volunteers, showed primary efficacy of 66.6% for symptomatic RT-PCR positive cases. This has been the largest vaccine trial so far in India for Covid-19.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
