Unfortunately in India and particularly in the north east there is very less awareness about the dreaded disease and its symptoms and about the preventions one can take.
On the evening of September 22, the management and the students of North East Institute of Fashion Technology (NEIFT) took a positive step towards creating a much needed awareness campaign about breast cancer. We are talking about the coveted and much awaited Third NEIFT Design Ceremony. Globally breast cancer awareness is identified with Pink colour and the Pink Ribbon. This year the students created their designs and collections in pink with the pink ribbon as a meaningful accessory.
At the strike of eight the MC, the popular radio jockey Florence welcomed the gathering in her unique style and explained the theme and the cause of the event.
The evening was kicked off by well known designer Meghna Rai Medhi’s collection, who is also the Vice-President of North East Institute Of Fashion Technology. Meghna dedicated her collection to the ‘beautiful woman’ and it was a traditional sequence in Sarees and Mekhela Chaddar.
She kept the colours bright and shinny considering the upcoming wedding and festive season where every woman wants to look the best. Each garment were intricately worked with different styles of Indian traditional and embroidery with Zari, Mirror, Sequence, etc. After Meghna’s customary designer bow one of NEIFT’S faculty member and upcoming designer Julie Sharma presented a western line for the young and on the move urban woman. The DJ appropriately played peppy World Music.
The eager wait of parents, guardians and well wishers changed to anxious smile when Florence introduced the much talked about PINK COLLECTION by the young design students of NEIFT.
An unique feature of this fashion show was the participation of four models of Sao Polo fashion week from Brazil namely Careena, Cintia, Camila and Christian. They all looked like angels walking out of a Pink Backdrop onto a 100 feet sleek white ramp in flowing pink garments which were beautifully accessorised by the students with pink floral bows, ribbons, bags, etc. Make-up artists Ratul Boro and team made all the models including our very own north east top line models glow in radiance with pink eye-shadow, pink glossy lips and soft curly hair.
The choreography was done by the CEO of NEIFT, Mr. Vikram Rai Medhi which was kept simple and sleek. Mr. Rai Medhi proudly introduced his students Barbie, Brijit, Geetika, Kanai, Kaisa, Ramtei, Sofiur, Rebecca, Nourhevenuo, Brojeswari, Bisheshwari, Samaur, Jonali, Reuben, Romi, Akum, Meenakshi, Lelek, Avenuo and others. On her feelings one of the excited Naga student Nourhevenuo expressed-“It was very exciting for us to design for the Pink Collection and at the same time we felt good as we were doing it for a serious cause like Breast Cancer. As students we are fortunate to have Four fashion events in our course period unlike other institute where they have only one passing out show, because it helps us to practically understand the pros and cons of the fashion industry”.
This scribe after watching the thought provoking and beautiful collection of the students feels that the fashion revolution of the north east is proceeding in the right direction by the able students of NEIFT. The event was supported by JMDC under Ministry of Textiles,Govt. of India,Landmark Hotels, Star Cement, Satyam TMT, Meghna’s and the event managers were Rhythm House. We all look forward for the next neift design ceremony.
(Silvia D’Costa)

In the west young girls go for routine checks for breast cancer in regular intervals as after reaching certain age they fall under the risk group.
