Gita Lama lives at No 10 with the Prime Minister and his family.<\/div>\n The Prime Minister\u2019s Nepalese nanny would not have been able to work for him under the Government\u2019s proposed changes to visa rules, it was claimed yesterday.<\/p>\n Gita Lama, who has worked for David Cameron and wife Samantha for several years, was recruited from a charity which helps immigrants escape from abusive employers.<\/p>\n Critics of the Government\u2019s immigration policies say new changes to visa rules would mean that women like Miss Lama would not be able to work for anyone other than the employer who brought them into Britain.<\/p>\n The proposed change is part of the Government\u2019s drive for large-scale reductions in migration from non-EU countries by 2015.<\/p>\n Miss Lama was taken on by the couple after they advertised the position with the charity Kalayaan, which campaigns to protect the rights of domestic workers.<\/p>\n She helped to care for the couple\u2019s severely disabled son Ivan, who died in 2009, and is understood to have been going through the process of getting permanent immigration status last year. <\/p>\n Miss Lama lived with the couple and their children at their home in Notting Hill, West London, before joining them in Downing Street after Mr Cameron became Prime Minister last year.<\/p>\n A consultation by the UK Border Agency has proposed ending the visa for overseas domestic workers or keeping it under a new proviso which means they could not change employer or seek settlement in the UK. <\/p>\n The visa was introduced in 1998 with the specific purpose of protecting this vulnerable group, who are easy prey for abuse and enslavement as they are usually brought in alone by their employers.<\/span> <\/p>\n \nFor More Updates, follow us on Gita Lama lives at No 10 with the Prime Minister and his family.
