Savi also highlighted several topics/legal provisions which concern the rights of the ‘Consumers’ during the training.

He informed that much of the daily food items including medicine were unsafe and as a case in point shared how a patient suffered after consuming expired pill bought from a chemist in Kohima in September last and another incident where a pharmacy owner was arrested in Kohima this month for running shop without proper qualification.

In this regard, NVCO has reacted to the news “drawing the attention to pharmacists without knowledge of medicine” published in local dailies saying, “without having knowledge of medicine is not to refer to ‘Pharmacists’ but the owner of New S.T. Pharmacy who was running and selling medicine having no knowledge of medicine and even does not possess any requisite qualification on pharmacy such as degree/diploma/certificate and he had also admitted before the police that he is just learning by running and selling medicine by himself.” NVCO maintained that the role of Pharmacist is very important as the pharmacists are the legal person to handle medicine.

It therefore appealed to the district administration and concerned authority to take immediate measures so as to control and do away with the shortcomings of proper practices such as selling expired medicine, sub-standard, running the business without license and also without registered concerned, recruiting salesman, etc.

Further, NVCO has also questioned the state government particularly the concerned authority as to why the existing strength of 490 pharmacists (posts) had to be slashed down to 309 posts while there was shortage of pharmacists even in government health centres such as Primary Health Centre and Sub-Centre.

“Without pharmacists where is the security of health care when the legal person who is solely handling medicine is not placed at the health care centres and this is also in contrary to National Health Policy 2015?,” NVCO questioned.

Two-day training on ‘Consumer Rights’ conducted by Administrative Training Institute (ATI) concluded on November 25.
