Automakers are gearing up to launch more than a dozen new utility vehicles (UVs) over the next two to three years, in a bid to cash in on the shift in consumer preference towards this segment.<\/p>\n
The new vehicles being developed include a micro sports utility vehicle (SUV) from Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) and over six UVs in the so-called compact segment, comprising vehicles that measure less than four metres in length.<\/p>\n
The remaining launches will be in the largest chunk of the utility vehicle market – the multi-passenger vehicle segment dominated by the Bolero and Xylo from the M&M stable and Toyota\u2019s Innova – where the Fiat-Chrysler combine is likely to introduce a slew of new products.<\/p>\n
Much of the action is expected to be in the compact SUV segment, where Ford\u2019s EcoSport will be launched shortly, followed by several new rollouts in the 5-10 lakh price bracket.<\/p>\n
In all, three new UVs from M&M, five from Fiat-Chrysler, two from Nissan, and one each from Maruti Suzuki, Honda Cars India, Renault India, and Ford India (apart from the EcoSport) are in the works. Not to be left behind are Hyundai India, Tata Motors, Toyota and Volkswagen-Skoda, which are also planning to ramp up their offerings in the UV space.<\/p>\n
The frenetic activity in this segment is not surprising. The UV segment is the fastest growing in the Indian passenger vehicle market, registering a rise of 54% to around half-a-million units during the April-February period. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
