Seminar on blood donation at YMC, Dmu

Students of Yemhi Memorial College (YMC), Dimapur was highlighted on the importance of blood donation during a seminar organized by the college with senior specialist and blood bank in-charge Dimapur District Hospital, Dr. Temsu as the resource person.
Briefing the students at the College conference hall, Thursday, Dr. Temsu elaborated on the importance of blood donation and the fact about blood donation. 
He said blood was the lifeline for all human beings and that there was “no stand-in for blood”. Dr. Temsu stressed on why blood was needed saying blood transfusion is a life saving procedure. 
The resource person informed that said blood was required for cases such as accident (vehicular), burn, cuts and bullet injuries, child birth, surgery –emergency and planned surgery, anaemia, hereditary haemolytic anaemia, coagulation disorders and chronic renal failure. 
Highlighting about the blood donors, he informed that replacement donors are family members, relatives and friends of patients while voluntary donors are self motivated with no desire for profit but to save life. Dr. Temsu also informed that the major blood groups are A, B, AB and O.  He further explained on who could be a blood donor saying a blood donor has to be in the age group of 18 to 60 years, minimum weight of 45 kgs and in good health. A donor can give blood every 90 days, he added. 
Dr. Temsu said the procedure was done by a highly skilled trained technician and that it takes five to 10 minutes to donate blood. 
Emphasizing on the benefit of blood donation, Dr. Temsu said by donating blood, the donor would have a “deep sense of achievement and wellbeing” as the donor has “done a noble job by practically answering the silent prayers of many patients asking for life”.
