To encourage the success of vermin composting and demand of organic manures, ATMA Niuland block conducted demonstration programme on vermin composting and its marketing and soil health management to the interested women farmers at Niuland town on November 2.
Farmers were imparted training by resource person, SMS (Soil Science), KVK (ICAR), Jharnapani James Kikon.
Kikon spoke on the steps of vermin compost preparation and its marketing prospects. He said sustainable use of fertilizers would have to be based on sound principles and practices.
On the day, farm women’s Food Security Group (FSG) have formed “ACHIPI FSG”, comprising of 16 women members. The main activity of the newly formed FSG includes vermin composting and selling its compost in markets.
BTM, Niuland block, Demalu Hasnusa highlighted the concept of FSG and encouraged members to set example and impart knowledge to other women farmers and SHGs in terms of farming activities from village to block level. Vermin beds and tools were also distributed to SHG group.
Package of practices for mustard and peas: Demonstration programme on “Package of practices for Mustard & Peas” was conducted on November 4, at Kuhoxu village with AO (Niuland SDAO) Temjentoshi as resource person.
During training session, resource person said that Rabi crop being a major oilseed crop and having an advantage of soil moisture conserved during monsoon, has a greater potential to increase the availability of edible oil. He also illustrated on the cultivation practices of garden peas such as propagation, soil preparation, seed treatment, planting, spacing, irrigation, weed and pest control, etc.
Mustard seeds (M 27) and garden peas (Arkel variety) were distributed to the participants.
Training on Swine feed management: Training programme on swine feed management was conducted for SHG members on November 6, at Zuheshe village with BTM Medziphema block Dr. Aseno Sakhrie as resource person.
Speaking at the programme, Sakhrie said feeding contributes 70-75% of total production cost of pig farm, therefore it should be balanced. She also highlighted on various energy and protein requirements of swine at different stages of growth.
On the day, Fishery farm school was also inaugurated and Hozheto Chophy, and a progressive fishery farmer was appointed as farm school teacher.
Adizeno Dolie, FD, Fisheries sensitized the farmers on Fish pond management and illustrated on pro-stocking, stocking and post-stocking management.
Oil cakes, wheat bran and lime bags were also distributed to the farm school teacher.
Training on banana cultivation: Progressive banana farmers of Tokishe, Zutoi and Zhekishe villages under Niuland block, were trained on banana fiber extraction and biological control of pests in banana cultivation by ATMA Niuland Block at KVK training hall, Jharnapani.
Resource person SMS (Horticulture), KVK (ICAR) H.D. Singh enlightened the farmers on various cultural, mechanical and chemical pest control in banana. He prescribed the use of carbaryl, dimethoate and phosphamidon in minute compositions to control banana beetles and aphids that causes infestations.
He also mentioned about various banana diseases like Panama wilt, Sigatoka leaf spot and antracnose, its symptoms and ways to control it by spraying Carbendazim, Dithane and Calixin.
SMS (Home Science), KVK (ICAR) V. Kenny Rhetso, demonstrated on the process of extracting fibers from pseudo stems of banana, pineapple and Ramie.
MEDZIPHEMA BLOCK: Agriculture Technology Management Agency (ATMA) Dimapur Medziphema block inaugurated fishery farm school on November 10 at Vidima village with BTM Dr. Aseno as resource person.
At the inaugural programme, resource person spoke on the advantages of integrated fish farming, fishery pond manure fertilizer and fish feed management. She also highlighted on the importance of liming.
Earlier, the programme was chaired by HO and BTT convener Temsu Longkumer and vote of thanks was delivered by ATM Zevosenuo Rutsa.
KIPHIRE: One day demonstration on cultivation practice of cabbage was conducted by Kiphire ATMA at Pungro Village on November 7.
Resource person ATM Pungro Block Sentsuthung presented on improved methods of Practice for cabbage cultivation as well as economic management of nursery for higher yield and income. He emphasized on the importance of right time of sowing, proper spacing, use of resistant verities and opting integrated pest management for control of insect pest can result in higher yield and sustainable crop production. Altogether 20 farmers attended the programme.
KOHIMA: With an objective to expose farmers to new and successful agricultural practices and to motivate and encourage them to take up such practices, ATMA Kohima organized farmer’s exposure tour to Wokha and Mokokchung from Jakhama, Kohima, Chiephobozou and Tseminyu block led by Dr. Vibeilie Joseph Keretsu (BTM) and co-functionaries on November 4-6.
The team visited Longkhum Organic Vegetable Farm, State Agriculture Research Station (SARS) Yimsenyong and KVK Wokha, during their visit to Longkhum, Yarba briefed about the benefits and success of the farm and also encouraged his co- farmers to be dedicated in whatever crops they grow and yield their interest in farming.
At SARS the team visited the fields and had interaction with Project Officer, Dr D.K Chetri and scientists. The experts highlighted about their work and proper management of various crop packages grown in their research station.
The project officer emphasized on the importance of millets and asked the farmers to take up millets cultivation as it is a climate smart crop.
The farmers learnt how to managed poor soil by growing more of legumes and green manuring crop from KVK Wokha. Apart from farm visit the team visited ABAM, Impur, Mopunchuket village and Doyang Hydro Project.
WOKHA: Agricultural Technology Management Agency (ATMA) Wokha conducted a training and demonstration programme on winter vegetables at N. Longchum village on November 2, attended by 45 participants and inaugurated an Orange Farm School at Hankvu village with Rentsamo Ovung as the farm school teacher along with 15 students.
A press release by project director, ATMA Wokha, Dr. Mhonchan Shitire stated that BTT convenor Chenithung Tsanglao chaired the programme, where the farmers were educated on packages and practices of winter vegetables by resource person HEA, DHO Wokha Shanchobeni Humtsoe. She had also highlighted on the importance of insect pest management during the cropping season, while field demonstration on nursery preparation was conducted by BTM W/Ralan block, Janben Odyuo, stated the release.
It stated that few packets of vegetable seeds as well as pesticides were distributed to the farmers at the end of the programme, with a vote of thanks from ATM Wokha block Nzanbeni Jami.
