Tikhir Tribal Council (TTC) has called a 48-hr bandh with effect from February 1 from 6 a.m. till February 3, 6 a.m. along National Highway 202 between Kiphire and Tuensang under Tikhir jurisdiction.
In a statement, TTC president Topan K. Tikhir and general secretary W. Tothong Philip said the bandh was called due to the “failure and non-response” of the government to TTC’s demand for the revocation of office memorandum issued by the state government June last year that indigenous/backward tribe certificates were to be issued only in the name of recognized tribes and not Tikhir tribe as it was yet to be recognized.
TTC said that the bandh was called with the slogan “Justice delayed is justice denied” as the council along with Tikhir Students’ Union (TSU) had no other options to press for their demand.
The council further warned that if the government still failed to address their grievances, the Tikhis would go for an indefinite bandh till their demands were met. TTC has also appealed to the public to bear with the council for the inconvenience likely to be caused due to the 48-hr bandh.
It may be mentioned that a representation TTC addressed to the chief secretary on January 23 had served one week ultimatum on the state government over the issue. On December 3, 2012, TTC had also served another ultimatum and reminded that in 2002, the government changed the system of issuing certificates to Tikhir community by adding the word “Yimchunger” in bracket after Tikhir.
