KOHIMA, NOV 18 (NPN): Water and Sanitation Support Organization (WSSO) Public Health Engineering Department (PHED) Nagaland Kohima, observed “World Toilet Day” under the theme “wastewater” on Saturday at Kohima College auditorium.
Delivering a keynote address, director, WSSO PHED, Er Yhusinlo Tep, said “World Toilet Day” was observed to raise awareness and inspire action to tackle the global sanitation crisis.
Based on 2017 theme “wastewater”, Er. Tep said by 2030 the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) aims to reach everyone with sanitation and have the proportion of untreated wastewater and increase recycling and safe reuse.
To achieve the goal, he said everyone’s waste needs to be contained, transported, treated and disposed of in a safe and sustainable way.
Despite access to proper sanitation being declared a basic human right, he said even today sanitation systems are either non-existent or ineffective for billions of people around the world. Er. Tep added that one in three people across the globe do not have regular access to a toilet.
He said access to adequate sanitation facilities was not only fundamental for human dignity and privacy, but also for protecting the quality of drinking water sources with significant benefits for human health and economic development, as well as for the protection of water-related ecosystems.
Therefore, Er Tep said sustainable sanitation services should be a part of a holistic approach to Integrated Water Resource Management.
He informed that globally 80% of wastewater flows to the ecosystem without being treated or reused. Er. Tep said there was an urgent need for a paradigm shift towards affordable technological alternatives for wastewater treatment which should be tailored to local and specific contexts.
