ULB polls: Vote against note ban decision, Cong appeals

January 20, 2017 | by admin

Reaffirming its conviction that ensuing Urban Local Bodies (ULB) election in the state would be a referendum on demonetisation decision announced by Prime Minister on November 8, 2016, the Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) has appealed to all urban voters to send the message of disapproval to the Prime Minister by voting for a few “brave-heart” Congress nominees and Independent candidates left in the fray.
In a press release, NPCC president, K. Therie, said that public vote was the strongest message, which was acknowledged amongst the democratic nations of the world.
Therie said what was important about the ensuing ULB election was to provide clean and decent councils and send a strong message of denouncement of demonetization to the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi.
“We also must tell him that we live in democracy and do not agree to diktats,” NPCC president said, adding that such a major policy (demonetisation) impacting the entire population of the nation must be routed through the House of Representatives.
Drawing attention to the BJP president Amit Shah’s purported claim that Chandigarh ULB election verdict that went in favour of BJP was a verdict in favour of demonetization, NPCC president said Nagaland people cannot afford to do that.
He said that everybody was suffering from demonetisation except a few “corrupt politicians and bureaucrats.”
Meanwhile, the NPCC has stated when the ULB election was announced by the state government to be held with 33% women reservation, it had welcomed the decision.
However, NPCC said in view of the tribe organizations and village councils having differences with the Nagaland Municipal Act, it had urged the state government to postpone ULB election for wide consultation to develop consensus.
Congress said it has presumed that the ruling 60 members have resolved the past issues raised by the Ao Community and the NMA, and that they were in command.
But, it said more issues popped up just before filing of nominations with stiff opposition from various tribe organizations and village councils.
Within a week’s time, NPCC said the situation went out of control and the government had to even extend the last date for filing nominations.
NPCC expressed pain that the state government chose the path of confrontation with civil society organisations (CSOs). Observing the situation, NPCC said many of its workers fully co-operated with CSOs and did not search candidates.
NPCC said it was on January 7, 2017 a few Congress nominees filed nominations assuring the Tribe Hohos that if DAN nominees withdraw, they would also withdraw. NPCC said its intention was to give clean and corruption-free councils.
For a decade, Congress alleged that NPF nominees have corrupted all the resources and ruined urban habits.
It further claimed that many of Congress nominees were forced to withdraw, but NPF and BJP nominees could not be prevented and some councils and nominees would be elected unopposed.
NPCC underlined that voting for DAN nominees would mean voters were approving demonetization, adding that it would be a terrible mistake.
