DRFCB awareness programme on river management

An awareness programme on the theme ‘River Management’ organized by Dhansiri River Flood Control Board (DRFCB) was held at Ura Villa colony on Friday which was also attended by representatives from Forest department and Irrigation and Flood Control (I & FC). ACF Senthil Kumar IFS and ACF Hukato Chishi attended on behalf of Forest department while I & FC was represented by SDO, Er Kashito and Jr Er Ahoto. Nagaland Pollution Control Board (NPCB) member secretary R Jhon also attended the programme along state unit president, JD (U) & PAC member S Lima Ao, who is also on the advisory board of DRFCB.
Addressing the gathering, S Lima Ao, in his welcome speech impressed upon them the importance of river harnessing and stated “If don’t harness the river then it will become a curse from blessing”. Asserting that a river could either be an advantage or destruction, he called upon them to try and not pollute the river and instead try to find ways and means to make the best use of it. Stating that the government has already spent crores of money on water supply, the PAC member also pointed out that still many people depended on ground water for drinking and cooking purpose. Later he also appealed to all departments to take the various developmental works seriously and try to make Dimapur into a beautiful city.
Er Kasheto who also spoke at the programme, thanked the board for the cooperation and at the same time urged the residents not to take away the stones from the retaining wall and embankments. While ACF Hokato also appreciated the efforts taken up by the broad in spreading awareness about the river pollution and other aspects. He however opined that in future programmes land owners should be involved in the decision making process and urged the board to take active part while settling land issues.
NPCB member secretary, R Jhon who also spoke, stated the Dhansiri was the life line of Dimapur and stressed on its importance of it. He also called for setting up a proper sewage system instead of dumping it directly on the river banks.
Later Chairman, DRFCB, Hokheto Kiba, elaborated on the various activities, aims and objectives of the board. He informed that DRFCB is a board consisting of nineteen members out of which four are advisory members. The chairman also cautioned that anyone found polluting the river would be fined.
Officials from National Institute of Hydrology, Dr Arnab Bandyopadhyoy and S R Kumar along with M Ahmed and S K Hazarika of Brahmaputra Board also visited and met the board member after the programme.
Earlier the programme was chaired by secretary, DRFCB, Inaho Rochill while pastor, House of prayer for all nations, Pheluotso Angami invoked the programme. Later the vote of thanks was said by information & publicity secretary, Mukibur Rahman.
