A crucial meeting of all political parties of the State to discuss on the 108 (Amendment) Act, 2008 (Women Reservation Bill) relating to 33 % reservation of seats for women in the Parliament and state assemblies, convened by the speaker of Nagaland Legislative Assembly (NLA) on Friday, has sought more time saying “the matter was very sensitive.”
Members who attended the meeting said the house unanimously decided to convene another meeting of all political parties toward the last part of November, keeping in mind the sensitive nature of the issue.
It was learned that the Union Government had written to various states seeking their opinion on the 33 % reservation of seats for women in the parliament and state assemblies. “All members who spoke sought more time,” a senior political party leader who attended the meeting told this correspondent. The members suggested that more time should be given in order to get public feed-backs and opinions of civil societies and NGO’s.The members also admitted that the issue was delicate and could have far reaching consequences.
Leaders of various political parties including chief minister Neiphiu Rio, leader of opposition Chingwang Konyak, NPF president Dr. Shurhozelie addressed the meeting, which was chaired by NLA speaker Kiyanilie Peseyie.
Party representatives from the Nagaland Peoples Front (NPF), Congress, BJP, NCP, JD (U), RJD and independent MLAs of present State assembly attended the meeting.
