Unable to safely defuse the approximately 150 kg WW-II bomb which was recovered from Kohima village last month, bomb disposal squad of the Army has proposed to carry out a ‘controlled detonation’ on December 20 at Police Reserve, Phesama.
According to police source, the Army bomb disposal squad (BDS) was unable to defuse the bomb earlier due to technical reasons.
There were various suggestions on dealing with the WW-II relic. Some suggested that it be defused and handed over to the WW-II museum while others recommended burying the bomb wrapped with salt for speedy rusting and subsequent defusing.
However, Army BDS rejected the suggestions and insisted on carrying out the controlled detonation, it was learnt.
However, police sources expressed fear that the proposed controlled detonation of such a huge bomb could not only cause damages to the surrounding standing structures but could also send a mild tremor in the surrounding areas of the state capital.
SP Kohima, R Tetseo, when contacted confirmed the report. He however said that the detonation would be subjected to clearance from the magistrate.
He also revealed that preparations were on at the play ground for the detonation.
Further, he disclosed that the Army had proposed/recommend evacuation of surrounding areas (residents) within one square kilometre as precautionary measures.
However, the same would be subjected on magisterial clearance as there could be damages to the surrounding structures, he added.
