Dr. Jamir to be the next Governor of Odisha

Chief Minister: For five times– 1980 (48 days); 1982-86; 1989; 1993 and 1998.
Governor: Goa from July 2004 to July 2008.
Additional charge of Maharashtra on March 6, 2008.
Formally appointed Governor of Maharashtra on July 8, 2008.
Took additional charge of Gujarat on July 2009.

Veteran Naga politician Dr. S.C. Jamir (born on October 17,1931) son of late Senayangba Jamir of Ungma village and Takatula, is all set to take on his second gubernatorial assignment  as Governor of a state.

He will take over as Governor of Odisha from current incumbent Murlidhar Chandrakant Bhandare, whose term expired last year.

When contacted over phone, Dr. Jamir confirmed the news to Nagaland Post. He disclosed that union home minister Sushilkumar Shinde had informed him about the appointment.

Dr. Jamir had his first gubernatorial assignment when he was appointed as Governor of Goa- from July 17, 2004 to July 21, 2008.

During the period he held additional charge as Governor of Gujarat from July 24, 2009 to November 26, 2009. Later, on he was given extension as Governor of Maharashtra from July 19, 2008 to January 21, 2010.

Jamir was appointed chief minister of Nagaland on five occasions- 1980 (48 days); 1982-86; 1989; 1993 and 1998.

Dr. Jamir is the only surviving member of then Naga People’s Convention (NPC) which signed the 16-Point Agreement in 1961 with the Government of India that paved the way for creation of Nagaland state in 1963.

He began career in national politics at the age of 30 from 1961-70. Jamir was elected as the first Lok Sabha Member from the state of Nagaland.

From 1961 to 1970, he has served as Member of Parliament and during this period he has also served as the Union Deputy Minister of Railways, Labour & Rehabilitation, from 1968 to 1970, served as the Union Deputy Minister of Community Development & Cooperation, Food and Agriculture.

He was attributed as the Parliamentary Secretary to Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru the then Prime Minister who also was in charge of External Affairs Ministry. He was a member of UN delegation in 1962.

It may be mentioned that Dr. Hokishe Sema, the third chief minister of Nagaland (1969-74) is the first among Naga politicians to be made Governor.

Late Hokishe was appointed Governor of Himachal Pradesh in April 1983 and resigned in March 1986 to return to state politics as chief minister.
