Forceful closure of shops irks public in Kohima

January 27, 2009 | by admin

Forceful closure of shops from 8 a.m till 12 noon in Kohima has irked certain sections of the public as the state capital joined the rest of the country in celebrating the 60th Republic Day today.
At around 8 a.m, uniformed personnel were seen going around the town shouting at the owners of business establishments forcing them to down their shutters.
“The whole country celebrates Republic Day in every corner of the country but such forcible closure of business establishment only happens in Nagaland”, said Bao, a citizen of Kohima.
He asked whether it was necessary for the people to witness the Republic Day celebration and go hungry as there were many citizens who lived hand to mouth with their daily earning.
Another businessman who wished not to be identified wondered as to why the administration had to force the people to join the Republic Day celebration by forcibly closing down business establishments, if the country was actually republic.
If it is for security reasons, then such action may be necessitated in the vicinity of the venue of the celebration, but the venue of the celebration had been shifted from its earlier location Kohima local ground to the Secretariat Plaza which is far away from the main town, he added.
In view of the Republic Day celebration, the DC, Kohima in an official note yesterday had requested for the closure of all shops in Kohima town from 8 am to 12.
The Republic Day celebration this year was marred by poor PA system, which disrupted the award giving ceremony award. This year the Republic day celebration witnessed several of the participants of the parade contingents collapsing on the ground including two constables of the Nagaland Police Women contingent soon after the march-past was over.
