Wife of a forest officer Obed Bohovi Swu, was abused by some locals, allegedly ‘encroachers’ residing adjacent to Zoological Park, Rangapahar Thursday.
According to the statement of the lady, around 30 womenfolk including men in five vehicles, went to their residence at Forest Colony here Thursday at around 6:30 a.m. carrying bags of weeds. She said the womenfolk walked straight into the room while she was praying and abused her by saying that “her husband has doing something wrong which is against the law”. They accused her of instigating her husband to destroy their paddy cultivated “inside Zoological park” then threw all the bags of weeds on her.
They said her husband officer in-charge (Ranger), Obed Bohovi Swu had no authority to destroy the paddy being cultivated inside the “Zoological Park, Rangapahar.” It may be mentioned that the same group was arrested by police on August 29 while carrying out cultivation inside the park. The same group went to the same house some few months back.
Meanwhile, Chief wild life warden, T. Lotha said under wild life and forest Act, forest or ranger officers on duty are authorized to remove any unauthorized structure inside the government area. He said that the department would urge the district administration and police officer to arrest the culprits,
“They had no right to vandalize and abuse someone’s wife, who was not in the picture as it was an official matter,” T. Lotha said.
