The 29 Assam Rifles during a routine checking at Dhobinala on Tuesday, arrested one Bhutar Giri (45) son of Rup Narayan of Gajipur Uttar Pradesh, around 6 a.m. while trying to smuggle contraband ganja from Dimapur to Bihar.
According to excise personnel, the accused was caught with 19 kgs of contraband ganja concealed in a suitcase. The contraband ganja was bought from one Kheto, a resident of New Market, stated excise personnel.
The accused in a statement revealed he had bought the ganja from one Kheto at Nagagaon for Rs. 15,000 which was then to be sold at Bihar for Rs. 30,000.
According to excise officials, most of the contraband ganja are smuggled into the state through Manipur and then smuggled to other parts of the country and even abroad. Earlier, on March 3 around 1:30 p.m. the 29 AR also seized 71 cases and 5 bottles of rum from a Maruti Van bearing registration number NL 07 2994 at Gorapati, Nagaland gate area and later handed over to the excise department.
The seized contraband and IMFL was handed over to the office superintend of excise department Dimapur by the 29 AR and the accused charged under NDPS Act and NLTP Act.
