Fiftieth anniversary of the opening of Second Vatican Council and 20th anniversary of publication of the Catechism of the Catholic Church would be observed on October 11. The Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI has chosen the date to commence a ‘Year of Faith” which would continue until November 24, 2013.
The theme of the ‘Year of Faith’ is New Evangelization. In this connection from October 7- 27, the Synod on the Faith will be held in Rome, which would discuss the topic: “The New Evangelization for the Transmission of the Christian Faith”.
The Vatican has unveiled the calendar, logo and official hymn for ‘Year of Faith’, which begins with a Solemn Holy Mass on October 11 in St. Peter’s Square, Rome. The logo is composed of a square, bordered field on which a boat, symbolizing the Church, is represented as sailing on a graphically minimal representation of waves.
The prayer for the ‘Year of Faith’ is the Nicene Creed (Catholic belief is succinctly expressed in the profession of faith or credo called the Nicene Creed).
The preparations are also on at local level in the diocese of Kohima. Most Rev. Dr. James Thoppil, the bishop of Kohima exhorts all Catholic believers of diocese to profit from this time of grace given by the Church.
As a road map for renewal, he exhorts them to participate in the Holy Mass as often as possible for a personal encounter with Jesus, frequent Sacrament of Confession to receive healing and deepen their faith, learn about the lives of saints to find examples for Christian living, pray the Scripture to know God’s plan in one’s life, to read the Council documents to understand the teachings and enrich one’s life and study Catechism.
