Tuensang Sadar I elections today

Election for 53 Tuensang Sadar I Assembly Constituency Saturday would witness a straight fight between Naga People’s Front (NPF) candidate L. Elam Chang and Independent candidate Toyang Changkong Chang.

A total of 22049 electors, with 11579 male and 10470 female spread over 30 polling stations would be exercising their franchise to elect their representative from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, DC and RO Tuensang district T. Mhabemo Yanthan said. General poll observer R.M. Jadav and police observer Sailesh Kumar Singh would camp in Tuensang till completion of the polling. Yanthan earlier informed that the general observer R.M. Jadav could be contacted at 9436275031.

Election to 53 Tuensang Sadar I A/C was countermanded following the demise of the three-time elected sitting member and former education minister P. Chuba Chang, who passed away on February 22 at Naga Hospital, Kohima. Late P. Chuba represented the constituency in 1998 and 2003 as independent candidate and 2008 as a Congress candidate.

Toyang is the son of late Changkong Chang, former Congress minister who held the seat in 1987, 1989 and 1993. On the fool-proof security arrangement, SP Tuensang, Roopa M said that five companies of Central Paramilitary Forces have been deployed to cover the 30 polling stations, all of which have been declared hyper-sensitive.

She said that the CPMF would be assisted by four Indian Reserve battalions along with 60 companies of 3rd Nagaland Armed Police (NAP) along with Tuensang District Executive Force (DEF) personnel.
