Mokokchung district administration has taken a decision to provide safe passage to one of the most mysterious and longest journey undertaking migratory bird on earth, Amur Falcon.
The significant decision to this effect was taken at the meeting convened by deputy commissioner, Mokokchung, Murohu Chotso at DC’s conference hall on July 4, reported an official bulletin.
The meeting was convened in response to serious concern expressed by Chief wild Life Warden, Dimapur over rampant killing of Amur Falcon during their arduous migration from Northern China and South West Siberia to South Africa.
During migration, Kanglato under Changtongya village and its neighboring villages provide stop over points to this raptor where thousands of Amur Falcon rest for about two to three weeks during October-November before finally move to South Africa.
Addressing the meeting, Murohu Chotso drew the attention of the participants on fast deflation of forest cover and random killing of animals including Amur Falcon during their migration.
He said there was an urgent need to put restriction on random killing of wild animals in the district stating that restriction would be for the benefit of people.
District forest officer, Yashi, IFS and Imcha, Asstt. Conservator of Forest, Changtongya shared their views on the need to protect Amur Falcon during their migration in the meeting.
Dobashis and Gaonboras also extended their support to the move made by the district administration.
After wide ranging discussion over the issue, the meeting decided to impose total ban on hunting of wild animals in the entire district in October and November.
However, a final decision to this effect will be taken after a meeting with Ao senden, AKM, Watsu Mungdang and village council members in the district. The meeting was attended by all the administrative officers in the district.
