Following the meeting between a delegation of the All Nagaland Government College Teachers Association (ANGCTA) with the chief minister on August 21 that ended in a stalemate since the chief minister did not give any definite assurance over release of pay arrears as demanded, a meeting convened Saturday in Kohima Science College resolved to go on pens-down strike on August 26 and 27 as phase-II of the agitation.
Sources however informed that the decision was reportedly taken through vote and was not unanimous. ANGCTA sources also informed that they would intensify the agitation till a definite assurance was received from the state government.
The sources also informed that as per information through an RTI application on May 2013, the reply to the RTI mentioned, stated that 17 members, including the director, additional director, joint director, principals and some teachers have received more than Rs. 1 (one) crore on December 2010.
The reply mentioned that from 2006-2010, the total pending arrears for the senior and junior teachers was a little more than Rs 19 crores for the 500 plus government college teachers including the librarians from 14 colleges in Nagaland.
ANGCTA demands
While initially being disinclined from going to the media till August 26, All Nagaland Government College Teachers’ Association (ANGCTA) Saturday said it has been compelled to launch its second phase “pens-down” agitation from August 26 to press for it demands on disbursement of salary.
ANGCTA action committee convener Dr. Maong and member Rakho in a press release said the decision was arrived at as the government had “backtracked” on its commitment to meet the demand of the agitating teachers before July 31 last over disbursement of salary. The press release said that the teachers’ salary has been pending since 2006.
ANGCTA also informed that an emergency meeting held at Kohima Science College Saturday reiterated to continue with the second phase agitation. The association has requested student community and the public to bear with the inconvenience caused.
The teachers had earlier decided to launch an agitation with effect from August 22 in a phased manner as the state government had backtracked on its commitment to meet their demands.
It may be mentioned that ANGCTA had been demanding the release central assistance for pay revision and that the state governments ensure payment of their share; to rectify pay anomalies; to withdraw Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA) Bill; to implement UGC regulations on Career Advancement Scheme etc.
