A seminar on marital discord was organised by Assam Rifles Training Centre and School, Dimapur. Padamashree Dr. Temsula Temsula Ao, chairperson of Nagaland State Women’s Commission as the chief guest.
Dr. Temsula in her speech she said that, all tangible evidence of discord, disharmony and open hostility between husband and wife can be felt, seen and often categorized.
“Sometimes blatant physical abuse inflicted on the wife in many households becomes public knowledge.
But more often than not, such cases go unheard and untried because the woman is too traumatized and intimidated by not only the situation but also by fear of the consequences if she reports the abuse”, she asserted.
She went on to add that there were also instances of financial hardship and deprivation from food and health-care on account of the man’s deliberate neglect of the family.
In such cases, she said, going to the court for redressal was an option because it was possible to gather evidence of the crime/abuse, other kind of marital discord is silent killer of many unfortunate women.
Dr. Temsula also said marriage was “complex and complicated” form of human relationship and it takes more than court order to restore peace and harmony in discord situation.
She added that law alone cannot bring peace to any conflict situation, be it boundary dispute, fight over property rights or even open acts of hostility between peoples and countries, and that “Peace can be restored only when there is a change of heart between the warring groups”.
She hoped that what has been said about this problem in the society has opened many eyes to the causes of marital discord and what kind of measures individuals and society can take in order to cope with this serious problem.
To remove marital discord, she said there has to be respect and understanding between man and woman as well as the society.
