
State excise department (narcotic cell) arrested one person on charges of possessing banned pharmaceutical drugs at Chumukedima excise check gate October 18 at around 12:45 p.m.
According to deputy commissioner (narcotic cell), Pitongse Sangtam, 204 bottles of Rexcof and Corex (cough syrup) worth Rs. 30, 600 (street value) was seized from the possession of the accused identified as one K Joel (33), son of late Shangkan of Marem Khullen, Ukhrul district, Manipur. T
he consignment was reportedly headed for Ukhrul, Manipur. DC (narcotic cell) said the van (Tata Winger – MN 01 X 9020) in which accused was travelling was intercepted at the check gate. In his statement, the accused admitted to have purchased pharmaceutical drugs in Delhi at Rs. 17, 100 and was planning to sell the same at Rs. 30, 600, as per the local market rate.
DC (narcotic cell) disclosed that the demand for such kind of cough syrup was “very high” not only in Manipur but also in Myanmar and Bangladesh for making hard drugs.He maintained that even though excise personnel were carrying out their duty vigilantly there were chances that “many” such smuggling of pharmaceutical drugs might have gone “unnoticed.”
To curb such smuggling, Pitongse said it was imperative to have good intelligence network, adding that with better intelligence network more arrests could be made.The accused has been booked under Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985 and Drugs and Cosmetics (DC) Act 1940.
