North East Students Organisation (NESO) has strongly condemned the “clubbing to death” of 19 year-old Nido Taniam from Arunachal Pradesh, in Delhi on January 29 and the failure of Delhi police to protect the student. NESO chairman Samuel Jyrwa and secretary general Sinam Prakash urged Prime Minister, Union Home Minister and Delhi Chief Minister to take adequate measures to ensure safety of the North East students, studying in Delhi and other parts of the country.
NESO also took serious note of the Lajpat Nagar police station’s refusal to register a complaint against the group of persons led by Farhan (25) a shop keeper and his brother Akram (23) for causing the death of Nido Taniam. It said the insensitivity of the Delhi police was a glaring example of racial discrimination. NESO demanded that severest punishment be given to all the culprits.
Stating that such incidents were taking place in Delhi and other cities, NESO said these showed that people in mainland India have refused to integrate people of the North East. NESO charged the centre including the Delhi government led by Aam Admi Party of having failed to live up to the expectations the Northeast people, by not acting promptly against the culprits”. NESO said that while step motherly treatment to the region has led to lack of development and already alienated people, the failure to check racial discrimination will only further alienate the North Easterners.

BJP NE Sampark Cell, Nagaland convenor Thomas Magh called upon the people of the North East, particularly the youth to unite and stand together wherever they are.
