Longleng Town Students’ Union (LTSU) in consultation with the District Administration, District Police Force, NGOs and volunteers of different wards, conducted surprise checking in all the Shops of Longleng town Thursday and seized expired goods worth more than Rs.20 lakh (retail price).
The checking was conducted after several complaints were received from the public of the district stating that unnumbered expired essential commodities were found selling in the market by pasting “fake trademark sticker” in all the expired goods by the traders, which left several people ill after consuming those expired goods.
The team was led by the ADC Wati Aier, SDPO Hongken Chang Longleng District Executive Force (DEF), Dobashis (DB) and Adh-oc Town Committee.
It was learned that out of hundred percent patient admitted at District Hospital, 80% were detected with unhygienic living those patient coming from villages and unchecked consuming of expired goods bought from the market.
Talking to this Correspondent, the newly selected office bearers of LTSU Angmau Phom, L.Yinglei and S.Dauhong Phom described Thursday’s checking as “successful”.
LTSU office bearers disclosed that they recovered “harmful items”, which were manufactured in Burma (Myanmar) without the manufacturing company name, trademarks as well as manufacturing date, which they claimed could have been mixed with “food poisoning”.
LTSU further revealed that the union confiscated several items that were outdated and items with “fake trademarks” and fake expiry date over the company’s original tag.
They further affirmed this checking was only a single step without much pressure. However, they warned all the traders not to sell any expired goods in the market. LTSU also cautioned that trade licenses would be canceled without any further notice.
When this correspondent visited the district hospital in the evening, it was observed that many patients lying in the hospital were suffering from Acute Gastroenteritis (watery loose motion with vomiting and acute abdomen pain).
It was also detected those patients were also associated with dysentery followed by acute gastritis. When asked the doctor on duty about the percentage of patient, the Doctor said this year recorded the highest number of patients coming for treatment at OPT and in-patient compared to previous year data with IDSP, AND CMO office Longleng.
