Governor, CM urge citizens to use technology to combat graft

Nagaland Governor P.B. Acharya and chief minister T.R. Zeliang Friday urged the citizens of the state to make use of modern technology to combat corruption in all spheres of social and public life.
In a message on the occasion of Vigilance Awareness Week, being observed all over the country from October 27 to November 1, the governor said there was also a need to be alert on the growth in cyber crime even as technology could be an effective tool in promoting transparency.
Dwelling on the theme of the Vigilance Week “Combating Corruption – Technology as an Enabler”, the governor said corruption had a devastating effect on poor people especially corruption in public service. Corruption costs the government, millions every year, money that could have been spent on delivering services.
He said corruption also meant that some people got an unfair advantage because they could afford to bribe officials to do them special favours.
He said that technology has now become an enabler for human resources as the same was used as important tool to promote transparency and accountability as well as to identify and reduce corruption. He said communication technologies could also support campaigning efforts and help mobilize people against corruption.
The governor said “technology can give real meaning to transparency and accountability, can help bring sunshine to the darkness. But technology is also made and driven by humans. Technology can help, integrity will always count.”
Chief minister T.R. Zeliang “Vigilance Awareness Week” was observed every year throughout the country with an objective to reaffirm the commitment to fight corruption and to bring about integrity and transparency in all spheres of public life.
In a message released by DIPR, Zeliang said technology was already the driving force of development, vastly improving the reach of critical information and services to the beneficiaries. He said technology could make it easier to figure out where and how it has gone wrong and to fix responsibility for the same.
Zeliang said that by using the full potentials offered by modern technology, the government would be in a better position to ensure transparency in all public dealings and transactions, thereby reducing chances of corruption as transparency was the best antidote to corruption.
T.R. Zeliang said the task of fixing solution should not be left to the vigilance commission alone and it was the responsibility of all citizens to participate in the fight against corruption.
