Naga WW-II veteran hits century

World War-II veteran from Phek village, who fought in the Battle of Kohima against the Imperial Japanese Army during the Second World War, celebrated his 100th birthday at his residence, Phek village on Thursday.
On the occasion, 46 Assam Rifles 2nd in Command, Lt. Col. B Singh, released the biography of World War-II veteran Sovehu Nienu in presence of Kuzholuzo (Azo) Nienu, MLA.
A brief history of Sovehu was shared by Chovose Nienu, his eldest son.
In 1941, Sovehu, a young student of Government High School, Kohima, joined the British Army as a Sepoy in the 1st Assam Regiment at the age of 25. 
In the battle of Jessami, fiercely fought between the 1st battalion of Assam Regiment and Japanese 31st Division, Sovehu sustained major injury.
After brief medication, he was re-assigned at Kohima, where ‘Battle of Kohima’ was fought (April 4 to June 22, 1944).
He was honoured with six gallantry awards in recognition of his bravery and service. He retired in 1948 in the rank of Havildar. 
Messages of Nagaland governor P.B. Acharya and chief minister T.R. Zeliang were also read out by the chairman of the celebration Kupota Khesoh. 
Earlier, Phek village Baptist Church (PVBC) Pastor Nuchicho Venuh delivered the opening prayer while Lozaphuhu Village Baptist Church (LVBC) Pastor Rev. Kevengoyi Sakha offered prayer for the 100th year cake. Special number was presented by Sovehu’s granddaughter Bozilu Nienu.
