
In continuation to the ‘World Blood Donors Day’ held on June 14, a blood donation drive was conducted at Sakus Mission College, here Wednesday which saw a huge turn up of volunteers from within the college and also from nearby colleges.
The event was organized by Sakus Mission College Alumni Association in collaboration with Network of Blood Donors, NSS, Red Ribbon Club and Nagaland State Blood Transfusion Council (NSBTC) saw a huge turn up of volunteers numbering more than 150 in total out of which around 80 voluteers were able to donate their blood successfully.
Blood donors consisted of college students from SM College and a few from neighbouring college in and around Dimapur.
Dr T. Temsu, a member of the NSBTC and his team of health workers came to oversee the transfusion so as to ensure safety of the donors and proper preservation of the collected bloods.
In a brief chat Dr Temsu thanked all the different groups coming to help out in the event and also the donors. He said there was a new turning point in the society as blood donation was turning into a social movement unlike a decade ago when people were very receptive towards such events.
He said the Dimapur blood bank charge was trying its best to ensure that it caters to the need of the whole state as 70 percent of blood donations in the state was come from Dimapur city.
Dr Temsu urged the people to come forward and work together so that the state would get “freedom” in terms of blood requirements.
In a short message, principal of Sakus Mission College, Dr. Arenla Aier disclosed that since its establishment in 1994, the college had been a fore runner in organizing blood donation camps under the initiatives of NSS and Red Ribbon Club which in turn was an effort to hold on to the value of serving humanity.
Dr. Arenla on behalf of the college thanked NOBD, NSS, Red Ribbon club of SMC and Dr Temsu and all the donors for valuing the event and coming forward to donate.
SMC alumni president Zang Aier expressed happiness with the response from the people and also thanked the various colleges for coming forward to help.
Convenor of Network of Blood Donors (NOBT), a very active group catering to the need of people in need of blood, Renponi Kithan said the motive of the group was to create extra awareness on blood donation since people were usually misinformed or lack necessary information on the noble gesture.
Adding that she was very happy with the huge turnout, Renponi said the group was all out to organize such blood donation drives in the future.
Answering to a query on how it feels to help out those people in dire need of blood, Renponi said, “I feel like a hero”. Adding that once a person starts donating, motivation and the pleasure in helping someone else drives the donor to donate at regular intervals as it only fulfils the true meaning of being human.
