Study on status of Naga women released

Chairperson Nagaland State Commission for Women (NSCW) Temsula Ao formally launched the book “enquiry into the status of women in Nagaland,” a study by North East Network (NEN) in a function held at hotel East gate Kohima on Friday. 
The book is an exploratory study on the status of women in three districts of rural Nagaland conducted in 6 villages during January 2014 to March 2016. In her address, Ao congratulated NEN for their devoted and untiring work for producing path-breaking documents and also lauded the engagement of NEN through various activities and programmes towards improving the status of women in the entire North East. 
She said their approach has always been practical in organizing local resources and honing native skills by initiating hands-on enterprises. 
Appreciating the task of NEN Nagaland project she said in spite of many hurdles the young researchers and field workers have accomplished a major task by meticulously documenting their findings in the monographs.
Temsula said it was just the beginning and should convert the enquiry into reality for Naga women to follow the directions advocated in the document and help the young visionaries of NEN in covering as many villages as possible in the near future. 
She challenged the members to convince the whole state that without the active participation of women, either in politics, economi,c and social endeavours, Nagaland will never achieve the vision which was created after years of struggle and suffering for both men and women.    
Executive director NEN Dr. Monisha Behal in her address said there was discrimination against women in Nagaland as per the study and research by the network and it often happen due to lack of institutional support. 
She reminded that the constitution of India gives equal rights to all and the government should extend support. Monisha opined that women giving opportunity in the election to represent people would provide better governance as women know the ground reality problem face by the people.
Programme associate NEN Hraveine David in her presentation  on “enquiry into the status of women in Nagaland” gave detailed report about the rationale, gender base discrimination, violence against women (VAW), scope of the study, objectives, analytical framework, key finding of the study and others.
She said according to the NEN researches it  recommended  the need to create community awareness programmes on gender sensitive socialisation and child rearing practice, and strengthen paternal responsibilities in mother and child care support systems,  create enabling conditions with Gender re-distributive policies to encourage girl child education at elementary, higher secondary, professional and higher education; and to provide equal opportunity for girls in making career choices, Gender redistributive measures to mainstream care work irrespective of gender, family counseling centres to be set up even in rural areas and needed of inclusion of women’s participation in public and political affairs through strategic gender inclusive policy and professional mandates for community based institutions and the Government stakeholders, the State must ensure the effective implementation of pro-women laws such as that of the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act 2005, to enable aggrieved women to access justice and support services must be provided for women who are the victims of violence.
SDO sadar (judicial) Neilozo Tep in his address said many domestic violence go unexposed or reported in Nagaland due to social issue. He said there was lack of dedicated and sincere NGOs to study intensively for women issues.  
Programme manager NEN Wekoweu Tsuhah proposed vote of thanks. The programme was attended by various women organization from different districts.
