The Fourth Session of North East India International Model United Nations (NEIMUN) conference 2016 under the theme ‘Transforming our world: The 2030 Agenda for sustainable development’, begun, Saturday with Member of Legislative Assembly, Government of Nagaland, Imkong L Imchen, as the chief guest in the opening ceremony.
In his speech, Imchen said every individual was contributing positively towards the global community by being a good member of their family.
“If you are a good member of your family and society, you are a good citizen of the world”, he said. Elaborating on the saying, “Think globally, act locally”, Imchen said, the world body ‘United Nations’ had its core set on the grass-root level in the form of families and societies which cumulatively makes up the highest governing body in the world. He pointed out that although a person may not necessarily vie for the top positions, he may diligently participate in the growth and wellbeing of his family and society which goes on to make up a country and thus bring about global changes in an inconspicuous but very crucial way. Speaking on the topic, ‘Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions, Sustainable Development Goal-16’, Director General of Police, Nagaland, LL Doungel (IPS) said, peace, justice and strong institutions were three important components for a progressive state where all the three complement each other and one without the other was impossible. He underscored that in order to help build peace a person should consciously understand and recognize that peace was one medium which was the prerequisite for human race to progress and the source of sustenance for civilization.
He cited the need for the youths present at the conference to work in the areas which would help in strengthening peace by mean of harbouring justice with the help of strong institutions like good governance, democratic principles and the unparalleled judiciary system. Describing Dimapur as a confluence of different communities, the DGP said, it was common for illegal activities to find a place.
While disclosing that with the emergence of various transport communications like road, rail and air connectivity, there had been a rise in unlawful activities, Doungel assured that the police department was well aware of such activities and that it was working on tackling it with the outmost responsibility. Speaking on the topic ‘Gender Equality, Sustainable Development Goal 5’, Lead Trainer of Best Delegate, USA, Laurabeth Goldsmith, said globally there was much to be done when it comes to gender equality. Enlightening the gathering with facts and figures of various nations where women were elected to the highest governing bodies, Goldsmith said, US was also on the path to becoming a nation with a lady as at its helm after the presidential elections due next month. She said, India was also ranked as one among the worst countries to be a female with high rates of female infanticide, discrimination, unequal representation in the governing bodies, crime against women etc. United States Agency for International Development (USAID)/India, US Embassy, Social Sector deputy director Paul Aiyong Seong spoke on the topic ‘Clean water and Sanitation, Sustainable Development Goal-6’. He made a powerpoint presentation on the areas which need special assistance in order to ensure clean water for the general population and prevention of water-borne diseases.
He said USAID was coming up with new user friendly drinking water filtration process and a mobile phone app to locate toilets to help fight against open defecation.
Earlier the opening ceremony was led by NEIMUN 2016 deputy economic affairs-Kahaan Mehta, Dzüvinguno Dorothy Chasie shared the ‘Whisper of Hope’. NEIMUN secretary-general Limaaienla Aier gave the welcome address while NEIMUN founder Limabenla Jamir shared the message.
