Huge cache of assorted Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) and narcotic drugs worth crores of rupees in black market was destroyed at the directorate of commissioner of excise on Tuesday.
The contraband items were seized by District Excise Office, Narcotic Cell, and Mobile Squad during the last ten months. It included around one lakh bottles and canned beer of assorted liquor, 199102 capsules of Spasmo Proxyvon capsules, 1027 tablets of Nitrosun, 1861 bottles of Elturex cough syrup, and 2080 kgs ganja.
The items were destroyed at the destruction programme witnessed by parliamentary secretary excise and land resources, B.S. Nganlang Phom, civil society members, district administration, church members, media, excise officers and public. At the brief function, District Excise Office, Narcotic Cell, and Mobile Squad gave reports wherein it was revealed that more than 1992 cases (liquor/drugs) were registered in the last ten months from which the department had realized several lakh rupees in fine.
Nganlang lauded the excise personnel for successfully seizing the illegal items and putting them out of circulation. The parliamentary secretary admitted that the task to the fight against liquor/drugs was massive for which, social/mass involvement was required.
He further reminded that it was not the sole responsibility of the excise department to keep a check on contraband/prohibited items but was a shared responsibility of every Naga to build a better society.
Nganlang, on the occasion also said that NLTP Act of 1989 was not a panacea for all evils despite its noble intent. To this end, the parliamentary viewed that the Act was “more or less a failure” with regards to its implementation.
He however, maintained that the excise department was doing its best to keep banned liquor/substances out of circulation in Nagaland despite limited resources, equipments and limited manpower. .
Commissioner of excise Tarep Imchen (NCS) also spoke on the occasion wherein he appreciated the efforts of his officers and appealed to the chief guest to look into the grievances of the department.
