
Nagaland, along with other states in India on Sunday has launched first round of Intensive Pulse Polio Immunisation (IPPI) for the year 2017 by administering the first two drops of polio to eligible children from 0-5 years throughout the state.
In Kohima, Intensive Pulse Polio Immunization (IPPI) was launched by principal director health and family welfare Nagaland Dr. L. Watikala by administering the first two polio drops to a child at Naga Hospital Kohima on Sunday.
In a brief address, State programme officer (UIP) Dimapur (rural) Dr. Visasieii Kire said India is free from polio since 2011 and that the disease has been eradicated. However, she cautioned that India remains at high risk till the whole world is free of wild polio virus.
She said department of health and family welfare was all geared up to administer polio drops to over 2.3 lakh eligible children from 0-5 years throughout the state.
Dr. Visasieii said that 2296 polio booths across the state would be manned by 9184 health personnel and 459 supervisors along with vaccines and other logistics.
The officials from H&FW, UNICEF, NHAK and other officers also administered the polio drops to the children. The officials informed that health workers throughout the state would conduct house to house administering polio to the child from 0-5 years the remaining two days January 30 and 31. The department sought the cooperation of all the sections of people, agencies, organizations, churches and community leaders to ensure that all eligible children receive the “the two drops of life” (polio drops).

Dimapur: In Dimapur IPPI Sunday 2017 was launched by deputy commissioner of Dimapur, Kesonyu Yhome by administering the first two drops of polio at District Hospital Dimapur along with his wife in the presence of CMO, Dr. Kinimi and medical superintendent, Dr. C.W. Tungoe.
During the brief launching function, Dr. Lanuakum, DPO (UIP/RCH) informed that 512 polio booths and number of mobile teams were set up across the district to cover 53167 children of 0- 5 years of age.
He further stated that as new cases of polio had not been detected since 2011, India has been declared polio free since 2014 by WHO. However, Dimapur being a major transit point, the influx of immigrant population still pose a risk for the district and the country as a whole, he therefore stressed on the importance of maintaining the resistance of polio in the district.
K. Yhome also reiterated the importance of polio vaccination and said that the large scale polio immunization programme could be carried out due to the efforts and team work of all medical staff and allied departments along with volunteers in the district.
Chaplain DHD, Rev. Yhunlo Thong dedicated the activity with a prayer before launching of IPPI Sunday 2017. The function was attended by deputy chief medical officer, Dr. Antoly, programme officers, nursing superintendent, projector officer (UNDP) and doctors and staff under District Hospital and CMO Dimapur.
TUENSANG: Tuensang District Health Society conducted the first round of pulse polio in the district which was launched by DC Alemjongshi and Dr. Temsu Longchar, DPO (UIP&RCH).
CMO Tuensang, Dr. T. Pangjung Sangtam stated that the department had mobilised 1,250 vaccinators, 46 supervisors in all the eight blocks of the district to cover over 27,552 estimated children below 5 years. It has also organised 267 polio booths in the district. CMO also acknowledged and conveyed his gratitude to all the allied departments and public for their co-operation.
MOKOKCHUNG: Mokokchung district 1st round of IPPI under the theme “fulfill our promise’’ was launched on Sunday at Imlong Place by Dr. S.S. Akaba Longchar who also administered the first two drops of polio.
In his short speech, he said polio was a highly contagious disease caused by a virus that attacked the nervous system and that children younger than 5 years old were more likely to contract the virus than any other group. He said it was very important to give these two drops of polio to each and every child.
Dr. S.S. Akaba Longchar said that the government of India was trying its best to eradicate polio all over the nation involving manpower, human resources in the far flung places and villages. He encouraged the different departments, NGOs etc to work together for a free polio country.
CMO thanked Dr Temsuyanger DPO (RCH&UIP) for success of the programme. He also informed that house to house visit for those missed out would be conducted from January 30 to 31. The programme was attended by Dr Kibangkumba Dy.CMO, UNDP, Red Cross Society, Rotary Club, NGOs and staff from DIO.
LONGLENG: IPPI first round was launched in Longleng district on Sunday covering all villages and town with the target of 7083 children from 0-5 years.
In the programme, Deputy Commissioner (DC) Longleng Dengan Avenoho Phom administered the first polio drops.
The programme was attended by Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Dr. Ritu Thurr, DPO (RCH/UIP) Dr. Imtiwapang Aier, Dr. Longai Phom, state observer from directorate of health and family welfare, Kohima and all the staffs of NRHM and district hospital, Longleng.
WOKHA: Together with the rest of the state, Wokha district conducted the Intensive Pulse Polio Immunization (IPPI) on Sunday. Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Enrithung administered the first drop of polio drops at the office premises. Dr. John Kemp SPO (IDSP) external observer visited booths in the district. Altogether 197 polio booths, 5 transit teams, 1 mobile team were set up to ensure all 0-5 years children population receives polio drops in the district. Monitoring and supervision were carried out in all the booths by the supervisors and house to house visit to be conducted from Janurary 30 to 31 at the urban and rural areas.
PHEK: Phek district has launched Intensified Pulse Polio Immunization (IPPI) campaign on Sunday with the slogan “lets gift a polio-free world to our children”. In the programme, deputy commissioner Phek, Murohu Chotso administered the first dose of polio in the presence of deputy director Dr. Nyan Kikon, district immunization officer Phek Dr. Kolhitso Khalo, Dr. Azo Louise gynaecologist DH phek, MOs, nurses and staff of DH and CMO office.
PEREN: First round of Intensive Pulse Polio Immunization (IPPI) was launched in Peren on Sunday at District Hospital, Peren with additional deputy commissioner, Tianu as the chief guest administering the first polio drop.
In the programme, the ADC mentioned that for a healthy society and family and to make a better future for the children it was important that everyone extend their full contribution and support in administering the polio drops.
In a key note address DPO RCH/UIP, Dr. Khrielasanuo mentioned that though the population was less, the area to be covered was more and thus making it difficult for health workers for coverage.
The programme was chaired by deputy CMO, Dr. Tiala and invocation by pastor, Ao Baptist Church Peren Town.
Altogether, there are 106 villages, 6 towns, 3 transit, 4 Medical Mobile Unit and 10 migratory population sites with a total of 105 booths. With the motive to reach out to every household, teams were divided involving health workers, Police department, 18 Assam rifles, Anganwadi worker, ASHAs of every village were send out to every part of the district ensuring that no child was missed out. The house to house visits would continue thereafter till January 31. The target population 0-5 years for Peren district is 13,294. The booth coverage for Peren district is 6782.
MCD: MCD members on Sunday administered polio vaccine to the children in New Market, Dimapur as part of the first phase of Intensive Pulse Polio Immunization 2017.
173 BN CRPF: Pulse Polio immunization cum free medical camp was organized by 173 Bn CRPF on January 29 at Govt. High School Diphupar Dimapur. The camp was organized by 173 BN, commandant Joseph Keishing.
Around 342 children of below 05 years were given polio drops. In addition, more than 200 personnel got free medical checkup with proper medication by Unit Medical Officer Dr. Api Bagra (SMO).
Mukhatyar Singh 2nd-in-Command, Sunil Kumar Sharma dy. comdt. & Philip, secretary village council were also present on this occasion.
