Legal awareness programme was organised by Nagaland State Commission for Women in association with National Commission for Women, New Delhi on May 17 at town hall, Wokha.
A press note by Lotha Eloe Hoho (LEH) president, Mhonchumi Humtsoe stated that during the programme, chairperson of NSCW Dr. Temsula Ao highlighted the purpose of the programme and said that “human trafficking” and “missing person” was unheard of as the parents were not willing to participate due to ignorance. She said that due to this factor, some other agents take advantage and easily recruit group of minors to be sold off elsewhere as forced labourers and prostitution.
She said that such matters could not be handled by traditional customary laws alone and needed to be dealt by the law enforcing agencies. She added that curbing human trafficking could be affective only through proper networking of the police, labour department and the NGOs. In this regard, Dr. Temsula also pointed out that church needed to play a bigger role as parents of victims too required counselling.
Others who spoke at the programme included Chumrenthung Lotha, SP Wokha and Limasenla Longkumer, legal aid counsel NSLSA.
The programme was chaired by Asangla Cholong member NSCW and Abemo Jungio, associate pastor Wokha Town Baptist Church invoked God’s blessing. Earlier, the president LEH delivered the welcome address.
