Global Iodine Deficiency Disorders (IDD) Prevention Day was observed across Nagaland on Saturday.
In Dimapur, Global IDD Prevention Day was observed under the theme, “prevent mental and physical growth retardation, consume only Iodised salt” with Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Dimapur, Dr. K. Vikato Kinimi as the chief guest.
The programme was attended by all the stakeholders including the administration, Dimapur municipal council (DMC), police, food and civil supply, food safety section, stockiest, principal, staff & students from School of Nursing DHD, program officers and medical staff under medical department.
The program was chaired by Esther, DPM NHM. Key note address was delivered by Dr. Antoly Suu, deputy CMO-cum-nodal officer, NIDDCP.
Demonstration on testing of iodized salt with the testing kits was done by Zabu and school of nursing students presented special number. All the participants agreed on working together for successful implementation of the program in the district.
LONGLENG: District health society Longleng commemorated the Global IDD Prevention Day at Government High School (GHS) Namching village on Saturday,
Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Longleng, Dr Ritu Thurr spoke on the awareness and importance of consuming iodised salt and the defects of iodine deficiency like mental retardation, physical growth retardation, goitre, speech and hearing defects etc.
He advised the students to educate their parents to consume only iodised salt, and also not to keep the salt near the fire but to keep it in an airtight container and store in a cool place. Dr Ritu also presented a power point presentation on “iodine deficiency disorder”.
In a keynote address, GHS Namching headmaster, Shauhong Phom, thanked the medical department for organising such awareness activity in the school.
The programme was attended by the staff and students of Government High School Namching village, district program manager, district account manager and district media officer. The day was also observed at the three blocks of Tamlu PHC, Yachem PHC and Yongnyah PHC with their respective medical officers.
PEREN: Global IDD Prevention Day was observed at CHC Jalukie conference hall wherein deputy CMO, Dr. Tiala gave a power point presentation stating that 1/3rd of the world’s population was at risk of IDD and 54 countries were still iodine deficient.
She further highlighted about the effects of iodine deficiency like goitre, stunted growth, low IQ, still birth, squint, and defect in vision, hearing in speech, impaired mental disorders/retardation.
Dr. Tiala also stressed on the point that once a person was affected with iodine deficiency disorder, it was not curable or reversible but it was 100% preventable. She stated that Nagaland has been declared as endemic state as it lay in the great sub Himalayan belt.
The programme was attended by the medical department, Jalukie Student Union, Jalukie Town Youth organization, chairman and GBs of various wards Jalukie town, president of Jalukie Town women wing organization, church leaders and teachers.
Food safety officer, Peren, Samlamgwamlie Michui gave a demonstration on salt testing on iodine and also public participation in interpretation with the quality of daily used salt was seen.
CMO Dr. Denis Hangsing chaired the programme while DPO NVBDCP Dr. Limatula gave the welcome address and vote of thanks was delivered by Dr. Khrielasanuo, DPO UIP/RCH.
ZUNHEBOTO: District health society, Zunheboto Global IDD Prevention Day at CMO office premise, Zunheboto.
Deputy CMO, Zunheboto, Dr. Hoito Sema as resource person highlighted the importance of iodised salt and shared some facts about iodine deficiency disorders and said that iodine was essential for the normal growth, development and functioning of both the brain and body.
Dr. Hoito also emphasised that shopkeepers should stock and sell only iodised salt and also advised that sale of non-iodised salt be banned under the provision of PFA Act 1954. He also shared about the responsibilities of every citizen to purchase & consume iodised salt only.
Free IEC materials were distributed. Demonstration of testing of iodine was carried out. Various activities like quiz & essay competition would be carried out in schools. Earlier, Vitoli, DPM, chaired the programme and Kakiye Swu pronounced the invocation.
