After the dramatic turn of political events which led Lok Sabha MP Neiphiu Rio to resign as president of the parallel NPF party when chief minister T.R. Zeliang struck a reconciliation deal with their common foe Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsu, Rio followed it up by also withdrawing his petition filed before the Election Commission of India laying claim to the NPF symbol and flag.
The petition, case No.5 of 2017 was filed by Rio with the Election Commission of India (ECI) on August 17, 2017 after both he and T.R. Zeliang joined hands to bring down Dr. Shürhozelie as chief minister and subsequently floated a parallel NPF to hijack the NPF party.
In letter withdrawing his petition, Rio said he had resigned as president of the NPF as per his letter dated December 8, 2017 in the light of the evolving political situation that unfolded during the past few days.
In view of the changed political equation, Rio therefore urged upon the ECI to accept his request for withdrawal of the case and to accordingly issue an appropriate order in this regard.
