Program in Longleng to discuss gender violence

A program to mark the Fortnight’s observation of elimination of violence against women was observed by Phomla Hoichem today in Longleng under the theme “End Gender-based violence in the world of work” with Vitoka Yepthomi, EAC Hq. Longleng, as the special guest.

Speaking on the occasion, Vitoka said violence against women and girls remains a critical issue around the world and it has been on the rise despite substantial progress and achievement in human development. He said gender based violence against women mainly occurs at work places such as factories, offices, restaurants, farms and homes. 

He also expressed concern about the silent violence against women in society even after several laws have been enacted by the government in the interest of equal rights and opportunities for all genders. He said violence and discrimination against women is one of the major menaces in society especially in rural areas adding that many unnoticed incident goes unreported. He therefore, urged NGO’s, intellectuals, Churchs and the student community to take responsibility to impart awareness to the masses, especially in rural areas.

Tialemba Phom, executive secretary Phom Baptist Christian Association (PBCA) Longleng, while delivering a short presentation on the occasion said, violence against women and girls is one of the most widespread, persistent devastating human rights violations in our world today. He called upon womenfolk to rise up and face the challenges without any hesitation in order to liberate themselves for a better existence.

Delivering a key note address on the occasion, A. Shamthai Phom, president Phomla Hoichem said, 16 days of activism against gender based violence began on November 25 to continue till December 10 with the theme “End Gender based violence in the world of work’’. She said,16 days activism against gender based violence is a global campaign dedicated to ending violence against women and girls worldwide. She called upon the people to extend all cooperation towards this campaign by spreading awareness to every section of the people. 

The program was led by H. Pauchen Phom, and Ongthai Phom invoked God’s blessings. “Voice” on behalf of 11 wards Longleng town, was delivered by P. Chempang Phom and the benediction was said by Niamla Phom, women pastor, Longleng Town Baptist Church.
