Meeting to review Malaria elimination held

National Vector Borne District Control Program (NVBDCP) State Review meetings were held on February 20 and 21 at the directorate of Health and Family Welfare Kohima.

A press release by NVBDCP stated that the two-day meeting was participated in by additional director, directorate of NVBDCP, Ministry of Health and family Welfare, Government of India, Dr. Avdesh Kumar, NVBDCP state and district officials and staff.  

The release stated that on the first day, in a welcome address, Mission Director (NHM), Dr. Kevichusa Medikhru, stressed on the elimination of malaria in the state.

He expressed the hope that the deliberations undertaken in the meeting would be helpful in propelling the state towards malaria elimination.

In his address, Dr. Avdesh Kumar said that malaria is a difficult disease to eliminate because it is a vector borne disease which involves tackling the agent, host, environment and vector unlike other diseases like polio, TB etc. which only deals with three factors agent, host and environment. 

He stressed on the importance of maintaining all reports and records at all levels for the malaria elimination certification. 

According to the WHO 2018 world malaria report, Dr. Avdesh said India stood at number four, out of 11 high malaria burden countries. India is the only country which has reported a decline in malaria cases by 24%, contributed to largely by the North Eastern states, he added. 

The address was followed by district presentations on program implementation in districts with inputs and suggestions from the participants.

The program was chaired by deputy director (NVBDCP) Dr. Neisakho Kere and an overview of the program was presented by SPO, NVBDCP, Dr. I. Talitemsula.
