Nagaland Legislative Assembly speaker in-charge has accepted the merger of NPP legislators Imnatiba and L Khumo with Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP). According to the speaker’s office, both the MLAs presented themselves before the speaker in-charge on March 20. The speaker in-charge also received a letter from NDPP president Chingwang Konyak that requested him to accept the merger as the ruling party had already accepted it.

Thereafter, the speaker’s office perused paragraph 4 (2) of the Tenth Schedule of the Constitution of India and relevant provisions of The Members of Nagaland Legislative Assembly (Disqualification on Ground of Defection) Rules, 2019. The merger was accepted by the Speaker in-charge as he was satisfied that it fulfilled paragraph 4 (2) of the constitutional requirement  of two-third majority of the  legislature and as the two legislators constituted 100% of the NPP legislature and also as the NDPP had accepted the merger and requested the speaker to issue necessary orders.
The two  NPP legislators- Imnatiba Jamir (13-Arkakong constituency) and Khumo Khiamniungan (57-Thonoknyu constituency)- decided to merge with the ruling NDPP on March 20, in protest against the party’s decision to set up a candidate for the forthcoming by-election to the 26-Aonglenden constituency.
