
District Hospital Dimapur (DHD) observed National eye donation fortnight 2019 with the theme “light up life, donate yours eyes” on September 3 at OPD complex.
National Eye Donation Fortnight 2019 is observed in India from August 25 to September 8 every year to raise public awareness about eye donation after death.
On the occasion, medical superintendent DHD, Dr. Z. Kheshito Zhimo informed that the programme has been organized to create mass public awareness about the importance of eye donation and to motivate people to pledge their eyes for donation after death.
He said due to lack of awareness, most of the people in the state were not coming forward to donate.
In this regard, he expressed that state government should adopt law on organ transplant.
Senior eye specialist, Dr. Asonla, who also spoke in the programme, informed the gathering that objective of the national eye donation was to bring down the blindness from 4.1% down to 3%.
She said in most cases, loss of sight could be corrected through eye donation, after the death of a person within six hours. She said corneal collection centre at DHD was started in 2011 and collected corneal for transplantation were donated to a eye hospital in Guwahati since there was insufficient facilities in DHD.
She said till date 18 corneal has been collected and transported to Guwahati.
She also informed the gathering that persons infected with AIDS, Hepatitis B or C, etc cannot donate their eyes. The programme was attended by doctors and nurses of DHD.
