In view of its panic buying amid surge in Covid-19 cases and limited production, the Government of India (GoI) has decided to rationalise distribution of Remdesivir.
Accordingly, health & family welfare (H&FW) department said States and Union Territories were allocated the drug on pro rata basis, and its procurement and supply was done as per the allocation.
Hospitals engaged in treatment of Covid-19 cases are to submit their requirement for allocation according to the quantity allocated by GoI. Further, the Central government and development/ donor partners also provide in kind from time to time.
The H&FW department pointed out that as on date, there was no definitive treatment available for Covid-19, and WHO had made conditional use of Remdesivir for treatment of Covid on November 2, 2020.
The department quoted Lancet Journal (Vol. 21, Issue 1, page 20-21, Jan 10, 2021) as having stated that Remdesivir was recommended for patients with mild or moderately severe cases not requiring respiratory support.
Mentioning that Union ministry of H&FW had authorised its emergency use in specific circumstances, the health department clarified that Remdesivir could be given in moderate and severe cases as per the State Clinical Management Policy.
