Besides various philanthropic programmes, the university converted its newly completed boys’ hostel into a Covid care shelter, free of cost. The initiative was taken up from June 2, 2021, with an objective to cater to Covid patients and those who had to undergo home isolation.
A press release from NECU informed that the hostel was transformed into a shelter to provide a home for people who did not have adequate facilities at home and for returnees who had to undergo a week’s quarantine.
There was a nominal charge of Rs.300 per day for food and lodging and applications were routed through the local Burma camp east block GB.
For a month, NECU has also been providing one meal in the evenings to over 200 persons living around Dimapur Railway Station.
From the third day, recipients were gathered in the parking lot of the station while adhering to COVID-19 SOPs.
For some of the needy who were handicapped and could not move from their dwellings, the food packets were provided in their place of stay. Some of them also included stranded passengers.
A group from the Jain community joined NECU for about five days, to prepare and distribute the meals. During this time, as many as 330 persons were fed and the university also distributed toiletries to the food recipients.
As per initial assessment, NECU otherwise issued 200 coupons to those staying around the railway station prior to the distribution.
Meanwhile, the university as part of its philanthropic venture also provided evening meals to around 20 children from the orphanage and has been conducting job placement drives for the under-privileged since June 5.
