SHILLONG, AUG 16: Meghalaya government on Monday further extended the ongoing curfew in the Shillong agglomeration by another 24 hours till 5 a.m. of August 18, and suspension of mobile internet services by another 24 hours in four districts of East Khasi Hills, West Khasi Hills, South West Khasi Hills and Ri-Bhoi.
The chief minister informed that five companies of paramilitary forces were being rushed to the state after Union Home Minister Amit Shah was briefed about the law and order situation here.
A vehicle carrying CRPF personnel was attacked by protesters in Mawlai area here in Meghalaya during curfew hours, prompting security forces to resort to mild force for dispersing the crowd, police said on Monday.
Govt orders judicial probe: The Meghalaya Cabinet on Monday decided to initiate a judicial inquiry into the ‘killing’ of former HNLC general secretary Cheristerfield Thangkhiew.
“The cabinet was briefed on the different aspects of events that took place in the last five days and also discussed about the police operations that took place on August 13 early morning and details were given to the cabinet ministers and officials and based on all those aspects and also based on suggestions that were given by cabinet Ministers the cabinet has decided to constitute a judicial inquiry under the Commission of Inquiry Act would be constituted to probe into the events that took place on the morning hours of August 13,” chief minister Conrad Sangma said.
He said the concerned persons who would be part of it have already been intimated.
No decision yet on HM’s plea to quit: Meghalaya chief minister Conrad Sangma Monday said he was yet taken a decision on the request made by Home minister Lahkmen Rymbui to relieve him from the Home portfolio.
“I have received the letter from the home minister but I have not yet made a decision. I will be examining the matter and will take a decision at an appropriate time,” Sangma told reporters on Monday.
