Working for the future

Nagaland has landed itself in a situation where honest work does not pay and anymore since there is no reward in it. This is a clear indication that the priorities have been messed up and society is in a reverse motion. It’s a topsy-turvey situation going around -socially, morally, politically and economically. The prevailing environment for some years has troubled many thinkers and concerned citizens who feel that after a good start from the 60s till the early 80s, the leaders of the state have taken a wrong turn in pursuit of fast and easy development. The leaders themselves were not immune from the sense of entitlement and so, they too passed on this to the people. The combination of such elements with politics has also led to evolution of politicians who are disinclined about adherence to rule of law for self benefit. This has led to gradual erosion of rule of law and adherence to the constitution (of India) and which are not something that should be ignored. In a way, along with the political issue, what needs to be realised today is that, the socio-economic problems have multiplied because of the imbalanced perception which accorded too much focus on politics. Guns and culture cannot bring glory but only through achievements in progress and development. That is the global economic language of identity. That calls for putting the horse before the cart and not vice versa. For too long have people placed the cart before the horse and it is time to do what is needed. All leaders may have their own considered viewpoint on challenges facing contemporary society but unless they mainstream these views, no common vision can be made. The young future generation have to be prepared in the way that enables them to move ahead to lead their people into the 21st century, where there is place and space for those are willing to move and not just sit and talk of their dreams. Traditional values that have imbibed the spirit of self reliance in the past, have almost disappeared and made way to a life of dependency upon government largesse. Such a trend has led to erosion of the base for professionalism which severely weakened the fundamental structures during the decades. It is also a time for Nagas to seriously ponder over the practice of resorting to rhetoric and self proclaimed dispensers of Naga-ness and damning others as anti-Naga or pro-Indian, not uncommon during the 50 and 60s.The situation has changed and today people need leaders who apply logic, clarity and courage to do what is right and good in the sight of God. Every notion and concept has to be developed and sustained over the decades or even centuries. However for the Naga people the concept of development continues to be barraged by the negative aspects of emotive and often, mythical politics. People of every race or nation throughout the world are proud of their unique identity or history and the pride is sustained by a sense of responsibility to build and develop society. Being proud of one’s believed past glory should not lead to being captive with the past but active for advancement towards the future.
