NSCN (R) vice president Akato Chophi is likely to cause a split in the group

In a significant development, vice president NSCN (Reformation), Akato Chophi, is believed to be mulling to split from the NSCN (R) formed in 2015.

Highly placed sources informed Nagaland Post that Akato has decided to split from the parent body (NSCN-R) but the reasons for it has not been divulged. Sources speculated that the reason could be over organisational restructuring etc.

Chophi held a meeting over this matter on October 19 at his residence at Hoito Village, attended by “all regional workers, UT-1, Naga Army and secretariat staff, who declared their allegiance to vice president, Akato Chophi,” sources said. 

However, it was learnt that the declaration of the split was deferred for “some days” at the request of a senior NPG leader. Sources from within the group said despite Akato “enjoying the majority support within the group”, he decided not to impeach the president Wangtin Naga and general secretary P Tikhak. It may be mentioned that Akato was a member of NSCN (I-M), NSCN (K) and joined GPRN/NSCN. He resigned from the post of kilonser for NGOs and Public Relation GPRN/NSCN in the year 2017 and joined NSCN (R) later that year and appointed as vice president. 

 
‘Declaration of endorsement kept on hold’
Meanwhile, NSCN (R) through its MIP informed that the meeting held on October 19, at Hoito village was “aimed for endorsement of some very important and impending issue”. It said that majority of regional authorities, UT-1, secretariat staffs, Naga Army, political wing and ACLs attended the meeting. 
However, MIP said that the declaration for endorsement was kept on hold/in abeyance for two-three days “due to a very personal request of WC, NNPGs convenor, N. Kitovi Zhimomi.”
MIP said that the members present– “HoD, HoM, chairman of UT-1/regional authorities, secretariat staff led by the chief secretary and home secretary, Naga Army officials, in individual capacities and by show of hands, in concurrence and agreement, all re-affirmed, reiterated and declared their loyalty and allegiance to their collective leader, Akato Chophi, echoing and reverberating behind the call of the vice president for ‘Re-Reformation’.”
MIP said that some, at the meeting even put forth their allegiance by quoting the maxim “A Lion leading some 100 sheeps is more powerful than a Sheep leading some 100 Lions.”
