In a delayed report, Peren police rescued two abducted employees of a construction company engaged in road work in Peren district. According to the FIR, six armed men abducted two employees of company on the afternoon of June 28 from their base camp at Tamphung village. Following a complaint lodged at Peren Police Station, an investigation led by the SDPO revealed that cadres of the Zeliangrong United Front (ZUF) were involved.
On June 29, police apprehended a ZUF cadre identified as ‘sgt maj’ Witingbo Chawang, reportedly the mastermind behind the abduction. Subsequently, under the supervision of SP Peren, the SDPO launched an operation and located the hideout the same evening. During the operation, ZUF cadres fired upon the police, resulting in a heavy exchange of fire. However, to ensure the safety of the two abducted civilians, the police only fired in the air.
The ZUF cadres eventually fled, allowing the police to rescue the abducted individuals. Police also recovered one AK 47 with 23 live rounds, one DBBL shot gun with two live rounds, seven live ammo of 7.65 calibre, one walkie-talkie set and 14 mobile phones from the makeshift camp.
DyCM lauds: Deputy chief minister Y Patton has commended the swift and effective action taken by the Peren Police in rescuing two kidnapped employees of NICADPL.
In a press release, Patton contended that the rapid response and well-executed operation of the police led to the safe recovery of the victims, who were working on the Peren-Maram road project. Noting that the team formed by SP Peren successfully rescued the victims after coordinating efforts to locate them and engage with the kidnappers, he applauded the team’s bravery in the face of extreme dangers.
He acknowledged that their professional conduct ensured the safety of the hostages. He said the operation also led to significant recoveries, including weapons, ammunition, mobile phones, cash, and a wireless set. One of the perpetrators had also been arrested.
He said this successful rescue operation showed the dedication and skill of the police force, adding that their efforts had ensured the safety of the citizens and sent a strong message against such criminal activities. He called for continuing to support the police in their efforts to maintain peace and security in Nagaland.
