A no-tobacco awareness program was conducted at Corner Stone School, Zunheboto, on November 11 under the theme “Don’t Let Tobacco Control You.”
The event aimed to raise awareness about the dangers of tobacco use and promote healthier, tobacco-free lifestyles within the community.
EAC Zunheboto, Chinglem Konyak, key speaker for the event, emphasized the significance of the theme, highlighting that while tobacco was an addictive substance, individuals have the power to free themselves from its control.
Citing alarming global statistics, Chinglem said that tobacco kills more than 8 million people annually worldwide, with over 13 million dying due to exposure to secondhand smoke.
He pointed out that India was the second-largest consumer of tobacco in the world, followed by China, and that Nagaland alone has a tobacco consumption rate of 42.6%.
The speaker also discussed the serious health risks associated with tobacco use, including heart disease, stroke, lung cancer, and respiratory illnesses.
He shared powerful visuals of individuals affected by tobacco-related health issues and said that tobacco use was the leading cause of preventable death.
Earlier, the event was chaired by Kilini Zhimo and began with an invocation by Akili Jakha.
The program concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Amy K. Yeptho, who expressed gratitude to all those who contributed to the success of the event. The session concluded with a benediction by Kapivis.
